Sweet Life of a Vegan

Sweet Life of a Vegan is a baking website focusing on vegan recipes.

Audrey wanted a website to display her recipes and baking videos. She already knew the functionality she wanted her website to have, but hadn't yet formed a definitive vision for how she wanted it to be presented.

Audrey approached JWG for help in forming this vision and developing it into a new website.

The Challenge

One of the popular Wordpress recipe plugins

Audrey approached JWG requesting a baking website that showcased her recipes, food photography and baking videos. She wanted the recipe page to be simple and quick to read through, and she wanted visitors to have the ability to rate, comment, and share recipes.

Audrey had already researched existing recipe plugins for Wordpress and was not happy with any of them. They were difficult to customise and didn't present the information in a clear enough way. Therefore, the recipe page required a bespoke form that would allow Audrey to input her recipe and relevant media (images/videos) in the back end as basic text and link formats, which would then display in a stylised design.

To keep the home page looking relevant, it needed to show the newest recipes and the highest rated recipes at any given time. Knowing the amount of content that would accumulate on this website over time, there also needed to be a search feature that would be able to filter recipes efficiently and effectively.

As this would be a monetised website, Audrey had decided to become an Amazon Affiliate under her brand. She envisioned a shop page that would feature categories of baking items, with product images and links that would point to Amazon.

Finally, to make sure Audrey's recipes would feature on Google searches, a search engine schema would be required. This would showcase her recipes on Google in the form of a recipe card. These are placed above the regular website links, and would show her photos and the ratings for that recipe to entice more click-throughs.

The Solution

A section of the new/edit recipe page

The use of the primary colour of the logo, dark green, and orange was used to create the foundation for a colourful and playful looking website which, when paired with the heading font Kiwi Maru and the body font Quicksand, is clear cut and easy to read.

A section of the new/edit recipe page

The recipe form was built in collaboration with the client. It is clear, concise, and easy to use. There is a field to include every detail or piece of information for any kind of recipe. If a field is not filled in with text, it simply does not display. This allows the essential freedom necessary for multiple types of recipes. This results in an overall page that is simple and straight to the point, with a showcase image and an option to add more images after the recipe.

There is also a built in option for a baking video to feature if one is uploaded. Having these options available means that every recipe page looks good and flows well, even when the content and media differs.

The recipe page

The recipe page needed to display the most features; images and recipe, additional information (e.g. prep and cooking times), ratings, a share function, and a comments section.

A sharing plugin was coded specifically for the website, giving users the ability to share recipes across multiple platforms through generating a link. It will also automatically create text that will be go alongside the shared link, which changes dynamically with each recipe.

The rate & share plugins

A ratings plugin was also coded specifically for the website to fit more coherently with the overall design. The plugin calculates and displays the average rating of a recipe, while also displaying the rating the current user gave and allowing them to revise their rating. On the home page, it shows the highest rated recipes, which updates as new ratings are submitted.

A comments section that allows users to leave comments and for Audrey to reply has been included. It features at the bottom of the recipe page, and is stylised to be in keeping with the rest of the content.

The search engine schema, which ensures the recipes from the website appear in Google searches, has been built directly into the website. This allows it to pull information from the recipe pages automatically, negating the need to manually enter information every time a new recipe is uploaded. This saves time and effort on the clients side, but also ensures data consistency which is crucial for the website to appear for relevant internet searches.

The home page acts mainly as a hub for the latest and highest rated recipes while giving easy access to the search function. It also serves as an about page to add a personal touch for first time visitors.

The shop page to host Amazon Affiliate links builds out dynamically depending on what products are added to the page. It categorises the products under different headings and in alphabetical order making it easier to scroll through and navigate.

All this was achieved through building a custom back-end form to input the Amazon link and image, and categories that can be selected as each product is uploaded.

The categories page displays the main recipe categories in an eye-catching way, making it easier for visitors to browse recipes of a particular type (e.g. cakes). The use of large images overlaid with clear text for each category makes the page look both appealing and informative.

The search results page displays recipes in a way that matches the overall aesthetic of the website. Using the search bar, users can search for recipe titles and keywords, but it also delves deeper. It will search through the recipe description, ingredients, and instructions to ensure that all searches yield the most relevant results.

The Result

Audrey now has a colourful and quirky vegan baking website that showcases her food photography and is all about sharing her recipes which is exactly what she wanted. It's quick and easy to add new recipes and media, and every recipe page displays to a consistently high standard.

Users can interact with the recipes and with Audrey, having the ability to rate, comment on, and share Audrey's recipes on multiple platforms. Overall, the website is incredibly eye-catching and highly shareable.

"JWG has done a fantastic job on creating a website for Sweet Life of a Vegan. It is more than what I could have hoped for and I am now incredibly motivated to turn this brand into a success."
